VERBAL JUDO
|
The Verbal Judo Institute was founded by Dr. George Thompson.
Verbal judo teaches how to deflect harassment and bullying by employing
tactical communication methods used by law enforcement professionals.
Dr. Thompson originally developed the system in 1983 for police,
corrections, and security professionals. Being a martial artist himself,
he adapted the system for the martial arts community.
Many physical assaults begin with verbal assaults.
Verbal judo teaches:
-
what to say.
-
when to say it.
-
and how to take action.
Action takes many forms and rarely means physical violence.
|
Bullying takes place in every part of life regardless of age. We
used to tell students to ignore verbal assaults. We found this to be
ineffective. We now teach them to address the verbal assault by:
-
using verbal blocking or deflecting techniques.
-
learning how to "actively listen" in an effort to gather
information.
-
learning when it is time to take appropriate action.
|
Appropriate action can take many forms:
-
Disengage.
-
Leave.
-
Call 911.
-
Notify authorities.
-
Appropriate action might require the use of physical violence.
|
Verbal judo is taught to all students at Miller's Tang Soo Do
Institute, Inc.
A confident, and assertive person requires the balance of a strong
mind and strong physical body.
